Choosing a cordless vacuum

Cordless stick vacuums differ most in weight, bin size, runtime and the floor heads in the box. Start with your floors and the size of your home, then compare the numbers.

Typical weight
2.3 to 3.2 kg
Typical bin
0.3 to 0.8 L

Most machines come with a motorised brush head for carpets and many add a soft roller for hard floors. Look at which heads are included rather than sold as extras.

Runtime is quoted for eco mode, usually with a non-motorised tool. Expect less with the main floor head and far less on boost. The runtime planner checks whether one charge covers your home.

A bigger bin means fewer trips to the bin in larger homes and with pets, but adds weight to the hand unit. Check the weight of the handheld part too if you clean stairs and upholstery.

Common mistakes

  • Comparing the eco runtime of one machine with the boost runtime of another.
  • Buying for the biggest motor when the floor head decides how well carpet is cleaned.
