In short
All Dyson V15 Detect editions share the same motor, battery, bin and particle sensor. What changes is the box: which floor heads and tools are included. Editions with the Fluffy Optic head have the laser; Animal editions focus on carpet and pet tools; the V15s Detect Submarine adds a wet roller head. Choose by the heads and tools you need.

Dyson sells the V15 under several names, and retailers add their own. That makes it hard to know whether two listings are the same machine or which is better value. The good news is that the core machine is the same in every edition: the V15 motor, battery, 0.76 litre bin, particle sensor and screen. The differences are in the heads and tools in the box. This guide explains the common editions, what each usually includes, and how to choose. Editions change over time, so always check the current box list.
The core V15 Detect
Every V15 Detect edition shares these features, on Dyson's figures and UK listings.
| Feature | V15 Detect |
|---|---|
| Suction | 230 AW (Dyson figure) |
| Runtime | Up to 60 min in Eco with a non-motorised tool |
| Bin | 0.76 L |
| Sensor | Piezo particle sensor |
| Screen | LCD with runtime and particle counts |
| Filtration | Whole-machine HEPA |
Common editions
Edition names vary by retailer and change over time. This table describes the usual pattern, but always confirm the box list.
| Edition | What usually changes |
|---|---|
| V15 Detect | Core kit, often with the laser Fluffy Optic head and a carpet head |
| V15 Detect Absolute | Fuller kit, usually including the laser head plus extra tools |
| V15 Detect Animal | Carpet head and pet-focused tools; may not include the laser head |
| V15s Detect Submarine | Adds a wet roller head for sealed hard floors |
| Extra or retailer editions | Extra tools, a floor dock or a second battery |
The heads that matter
The heads make the biggest practical difference. The Fluffy Optic head has the laser and a soft roller for hard floors. The High Torque or Digital Motorbar head is for carpet and enables Auto mode. The Submarine head washes sealed hard floors.
If you have mostly hard floors, make sure your edition includes the Fluffy Optic head. If you have mostly carpet, the carpet head matters most and the laser is a bonus. Our Dyson heads explainer explains each head.
Stiff bristle motorised head
Suits: Carpet pile and rugs
Soft roller head
Suits: Wood planks, laminate, vinyl
Anti-tangle conical bar
Suits: Tiles and mixed floors with pet hair
Tools in the box
Most editions include a crevice tool and a combination tool. Many add the hair screw tool, which spirals hair off its conical brush bar, useful for sofas and pet beds. Absolute and Extra editions often add more brushes and tools for dusting and high places.
Extra tools are useful only if you will use them. If you mainly clean floors, a simpler edition at a lower price is often the better value.
How to choose
Start with your floors, then add tools you will use. Mostly hard floors: an edition with the Fluffy Optic head. Mostly carpet with pets: an Animal edition with the hair screw tool. Lots of sealed hard floor you want to wash: the Submarine.
Compare prices across editions. Sometimes a fuller edition costs only a little more than a basic one; sometimes the gap is large. Our is the V15 worth it article helps decide whether the V15 suits you at all.
V15 and its relatives
The V15 sits between the V12 Detect Slim, which is lighter with a laser head, and the Gen5 Detect, which is Dyson's newer flagship. Our V12 vs V15 and Gen5 vs V15 comparisons explain those choices.
If you see a listing for a V15 with an unusual name, check the model number and box contents on Dyson's site before buying.
Reading a listing
A good listing names the edition, lists every head and tool in the box and gives the model number. Be cautious with listings that only say V15 without an edition name, or that show photos of heads not listed in the contents.
If a listing is unclear, compare the box list on Dyson UK for that edition. Our Dyson release dates article puts the V15 in context with Dyson's other models.
Accessories you can add later
If your edition lacks a head or tool you want, you can usually buy it separately from Dyson. The V15 shares its head fitting with the V10, V11 and other in-line Dysons, so many heads and tools are interchangeable. A floor dock can also be bought on its own if you cannot fix the wall dock.
Buying a cheaper edition and adding one accessory can cost less than a full Absolute kit, especially if you only need one extra item. Check Dyson's compatibility list before you buy any accessory.
