Shoppers often ask what stick vacuum is comparable to a Dyson. The Dreame Z20 is one of the most common answers, because its listing reads like a flagship: high suction, long runtime, dust detection and lit heads. This comparison sets the Amazon UK listing facts for the Dreame Z20 against the Dyson V15 Detect Animal and explains where each one has the edge. We do not score cleaning results; we compare what each maker states and what that means for different homes.

Listed specs side by side

Suction figures are maker figures and measured differently by each brand, so treat them as a rough guide. Our suction explainer covers why.

Suction and runtime

On paper the Z20 wins both: 250 AW against 230 AW, and up to 90 minutes against up to 60. Both maximum runtimes are in the lowest mode with a non-motorised tool, so with the main head on carpet you will get much less from each. Even so, a longer quoted maximum usually means more headroom in real use.

Both machines raise suction automatically when they detect more dirt. The Dyson's piezo sensor sizes and counts particles and shows them on the screen. The Dreame uses an infrared sensor and shows dirt levels on its display. Both approaches do the same practical job: boosting power when the floor is dirtier.

Heads and lights

The Z20 comes with two heads: a soft roller and a multi-surface brush, both lit. The lights help you see dust on hard floors in the way a laser does, though the Dyson laser line is sharper at showing fine particles. The V15 Detect Animal's listing describes a High Torque head with a de-tangling comb, plus a hair screw tool; editions with the Fluffy Optic laser head add the laser.

For mixed homes with carpet and hard floors, both offer a head for each surface. For long pet hair, check that the edition you buy includes a de-tangling head. Our pet hair guide lists suitable models.

Bin, weight and handling

The V15's 0.76 litre bin is larger than the Z20's 0.6 litres, which matters in homes with pets or lots of carpet. The Z20 listing gives 2 kg, but it is not clear whether that includes the wand and head, so treat it with care. The V15 Detect Animal listing gives 3 kg. In practice both are in the usual range for full-size sticks.

Service and parts are a fair consideration. Dyson has a long UK presence and a wide range of spare parts. Dreame's support has grown, and both sell spares, but check availability for filters, batteries and rollers before you buy.

Which should you buy?

Choose the Dreame Z20 if you want long runtime, lit heads and automatic suction at a lower price, and you are happy with a slightly smaller bin. Choose the Dyson V15 Detect if you want the laser head, the particle counter, a larger bin and Dyson's spare parts network.

Running costs and long-term ownership

Both machines use washable filters, so there is no regular filter bill if you clean them as the manual says. The main long-term cost is the battery, which wears with use on any cordless. Battery design varies by edition on both brands: some packs click out by hand, others are fixed with screws. Check how the battery is fitted on the exact edition you buy if a spare matters to you.

Brush rolls and soft rollers wear too, especially in homes with pets. Before choosing either machine, search for the spare roller and battery and check they are in stock in the UK. Our cordless lifespan article explains what to expect over several years.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Dreame Z20 as good as a Dyson? On listed specs it matches or beats the V15 on suction and runtime. The Dyson has a larger bin, the laser head and a longer UK spares history.

Does the Dreame Z20 have a laser? No. It uses lit floor heads that light the floor ahead, which help you see dust on hard floors.

Which has the longer runtime? The Z20 lists up to 90 minutes against up to 60 for the V15, both in the lowest mode.

Which is better for carpet? Both have a motorised brush head for carpet. The V15's High Torque head adjusts to the floor, and the Z20 adjusts suction to dirt levels.
