In short
The V15 Detect is the bigger, stronger and smarter machine: up to 60 minutes against 40, a 0.76 litre bin against 0.54, a click-in battery, a dust sensor and a screen. The V8 is lighter, simpler and much cheaper. For a flat or a small house with mostly hard floors, a V8 does the job; for larger homes, thick carpet or pets, the V15 is worth the step up.

Our verdict
Buy a V8 Advanced or V8 Origin for flats and smaller homes with mostly hard floors, where its lighter weight and lower price win. Buy the V15 Detect Animal for larger homes, thick carpet or pets, where the longer runtime, bigger bin, click-in battery and dust sensor earn their cost.
The V8 and the V15 Detect sit at opposite ends of Dyson's cordless range. The V8 first appeared around 2016 and is still sold in updated forms such as the V8 Origin and V8 Advanced. The V15 Detect arrived around 2021 as Dyson's flagship, adding a particle sensor, an LCD screen and a lit hard floor head on many editions. Both are cyclonic sticks that convert to a handheld. This comparison uses the listing facts for the V8 Advanced, V8 Origin and V15 Detect Animal sold on Amazon UK, and explains which differences matter in a real home.

Suction and cleaning on carpet
The V8 Advanced listing gives 130 AW, described by Dyson as the strongest V8 so far, and the V8 Origin gives 115 AW. Both use a V8 motor spinning at up to 110,000 rpm, with two modes: Eco for everyday cleaning and Max for short bursts. On hard floors and short pile carpet, that is plenty.
The V15 Detect is in a different class. Dyson quoted 230 AW at launch, and the V15 Detect Animal listing describes 14 Root Cyclones generating up to 100,000g. Its High Torque head with DLS monitors brush bar resistance 360 times a second in Auto mode and adjusts power for the floor type, while the piezo sensor raises suction when it detects more dust. On thick carpet, rugs and pet hair, the V15 lifts more in fewer passes. If most of your home is carpeted, see our best cordless vacuums for carpet guide.
Runtime, battery fitting and charging
Both V8 listings give up to 40 minutes, and the V15 Detect Animal listing gives up to 60 minutes. As always, these are maximums in the lowest mode, usually with a non-motorised tool. The V8 Animal listing, for example, gives up to 25 minutes with the motorised floor tool. Expect the V15 in Auto with its main head to run noticeably longer than a V8 with its Motorbar head, but well short of the full hour.
Battery fitting is a practical difference. On the V8, the battery is held in by screws, so swapping it is a small screwdriver job and not something you do mid-clean. The V15 uses a click-in battery, so you can buy a spare and swap it in seconds. The V8 listings give charge times of 4.5 to 5 hours. Our runtime planner helps you check whether 40 minutes in Eco covers your home.
Note:Before replacing a V8 battery, switch off and unplug the charger, and follow Dyson's instructions. Do not use a swollen, damaged or very hot battery, use the Dyson charger or a compatible one for your model, and recycle old packs at a battery recycling point, never in household waste.
Bin size and emptying
The V8 bin holds 0.54 litres; the V15 Detect bin holds 0.76 litres. In a flat, the V8 bin is fine for one clean. In a family house, especially with pets, you may need to empty a V8 partway through. Both use Dyson's push lever emptying, which slides the bin open over the dustbin so you do not need to reach inside.
A smaller bin also keeps the V8 compact and light as a handheld, which helps with stairs, car interiors and upholstery.
The Detect features: worth paying for?
The V15's Detect features are the clearest upgrade. The piezo sensor sizes and counts dust particles and raises suction automatically when needed, and the LCD screen shows what has been picked up, the mode and the remaining runtime. On many editions, a lit Laser Slim Fluffy head shows fine dust on hard floors that is hard to see in normal light. The V15 Detect Animal listing does not list that head, so check the box contents.
The V15 Detect Animal also includes a Hair screw tool with a conical brush bar, and its High Torque head has a de-tangling comb. The V8 Origin comes with a De-tangling Motorbar head, so long hair wrapping is less of a gap than it was on older V8s. Whether the sensor and screen are worth paying for depends on you: they help you clean more thoroughly and use battery efficiently, but they do not change what the floor head physically picks up. Our Detect features explainer goes into more detail.
Weight and everyday handling
The V8 listings give 2.5 to 2.6 kg and the V15 Detect Animal gives 3 kg. Half a kilo does not sound much, but it is held at arm's length when you clean above the floor or carry the machine upstairs. The V8 feels nimble and suits quick daily tidies, small spaces and people who find heavier sticks tiring.
The V15 feels more solid and its extra power reduces the number of passes on carpet. If you mainly want a light machine for quick jobs, our lightweight cordless vacuum guide lists other options.
Frequently asked questions
Is the V15 much better than the V8? On carpet, pet hair and larger homes, yes: more suction, a longer runtime, a bigger bin and the dust sensor. On hard floors in a small home, the V8 does most of the same jobs for much less money.
Can I swap the battery on a V8 like on the V15? Not as easily. The V8 battery is fixed with screws, so changing it takes a screwdriver. The V15 has a click-in battery you can swap in seconds.
Do V8 tools fit the V15? Dyson has used the same click-on connection on many models from the V7 onwards, so many tools cross over, but not every head is compatible with every machine. Check Dyson's compatibility guide before buying.
Which is better for pet hair? The V15 Detect Animal, with its de-tangling High Torque head, Hair screw tool and stronger suction. The V8 Origin's De-tangling Motorbar still handles everyday pet hair in a smaller home.
