The Dyson V8 has been on sale since around 2016 and is still sold new in several editions. The names can be confusing, especially as some listings for the same edition quote different suction figures. This guide explains what the V8 editions share, how they differ, and which one suits which home. It uses Amazon UK listing facts for the V8 Origin, V8 Absolute, V8 Advanced and V8 Animal. Editions change, so always check the box list before you buy.

What every V8 shares

All current V8 editions use the same basic machine. The differences are in what comes in the box.

The editions compared

Based on Amazon UK listings. Suction figures differ between listings of the same name, which suggests Dyson has updated some editions over time.

Heads: the main difference

The Soft Roller head in the Absolute suits hard floors, picking up fine dust and larger debris. The Direct Drive head suits carpet, driving bristles into the pile. The de-tangling Motorbar on newer Origin editions works on both and clears long hair from the brush bar as you clean.

If you have long-haired pets or long hair in the house, an edition with the de-tangling Motorbar saves time cutting hair off the bar. Our Dyson heads explainer explains each head, and our V8 head guide covers swapping heads.

Tools and docks

Most V8 editions include a crevice tool and a combination tool. Animal editions add a mini motorised tool for upholstery, stairs and pet beds. Most include a wall dock with charger.

If you plan to clean sofas, cars or stairs often, the mini motorised tool is worth having. It can also be bought separately.

Which V8 for which home

Choose by floors and pets. Mostly hard floors: the Absolute with its Soft Roller. Mixed floors with long hair: an Origin with the de-tangling Motorbar. Carpet and pets: the Animal with its mini motorised tool. If the Advanced is priced close to others, its higher listed suction is a bonus.

Whichever you choose, the V8's 40 minute runtime and smaller bin suit flats and smaller homes best. Our V8 vs V11 comparison shows what you gain by moving up.

V8 against newer Dysons

The V8 is lighter and more compact than the V10, V11 and V15, which makes it handy for quick cleans and above-floor jobs. Newer models add longer runtime, a bigger bin, three modes and, on the V11 and later, a screen.

Our V8 vs V15 comparison and Dyson cordless comparison cover those choices.

Checking a V8 listing

Because several V8 editions are on sale, check the edition name, the box list and the model number. Photos sometimes show heads that are not in the box. If suction figures differ between two listings of the same name, compare the model numbers on Dyson UK.

Our Dyson release dates article puts the V8 in context with Dyson's other cordless models.

Running costs and spares

The V8's filter is washable, so there is no regular filter cost. The battery is the part most likely to need replacing after several years, and V8 batteries are widely available. Because the V8 has been sold for so long, heads, tools and spares are easy to find in the UK.

That long spares history is one reason the V8 remains popular as a lower-priced Dyson. Our V8 battery guide explains how a battery swap works.

Who should skip the V8

If you have a large home, lots of carpet or several pets, the 40 minute runtime and 0.54 litre bin may feel limiting. You will empty the bin often and may need to recharge mid-clean. A V10, V11 or a rival with a removable battery suits that kind of home better.

Our long runtime guide and pet hair guide list stronger options for bigger homes.
