Our verdict
Choose the Shark PowerPro for larger homes, under-furniture reach and a removable battery. Choose the Dyson V8 for smaller homes, quick daily tidies and a compact handheld.
The Dyson V8 and the Shark PowerPro sit at similar price points and are often compared by people moving from a corded vacuum. They take quite different approaches. The V8 is an older, compact Dyson with the bin and motor in your hand. The PowerPro is a newer Shark with a bending wand, floor-sensing head and a battery you can charge off the machine. This guide uses the Amazon UK listings for the V8 Absolute and the Shark PowerPro IZ380UK.
The specs side by side
Figures come from the Amazon UK listings. Listing weights for both are packaging or confused figures, so we leave them out; check the makers' sites for in-use weight.

Runtime and battery
The PowerPro lists up to 50 minutes against up to 40 for the V8, both in the lowest mode with a non-motorised tool. With the main head on carpet, both give far less. The bigger practical difference is battery design. The Shark battery clicks out, so you can charge it in a kitchen socket while the vacuum stays in a cupboard, and a second battery can be added. The V8 battery is fixed into the handle and is replaced with screws.
Our runtime planner helps you check whether either covers your home in one charge.
Heads and hair
The V8 Absolute listing includes a Direct Drive motor head for carpet and a soft roller for hard floors, so you swap heads by floor type. The PowerPro has one multi-surface head with FloorDetect, which senses the floor and changes brush roll speed, and Anti Hair Wrap technology to stop hair wrapping round the roll.
If you have long-haired pets or long human hair, check which V8 edition you are buying. Newer V8 editions have a de-tangling Motorbar, older ones do not. Our anti hair wrap explainer covers how each design works.

Reach, storage and handling
Shark's Flexology wand bends in the middle so you can push the head under a sofa or bed without kneeling, and it folds over to stand on its own for storage. The V8 has a straight wand and is usually stored on its wall dock.
The V8 is the more nimble of the two in the hand, which suits quick daily cleans and above-floor jobs like curtains and shelves. The PowerPro is more comfortable for longer floor cleans thanks to the bending wand and bigger dust cup.
Guarantees and spares
Shark's listing states a 5-year guarantee on registration, with 2 years for batteries. Dyson typically offers a 2-year guarantee on cordless machines; check the terms for the specific model when you register. Both brands sell filters, batteries and heads in the UK.
Our Shark range guide and Dyson range guide list the current models if neither of these suits you.
Emptying and maintenance
Emptying differs. The V8 has a point-and-shoot bin: you hold it over the bin and pull a lever, which pushes the debris out. The PowerPro's dust cup opens with a release button on the cup. Both are quick, but the larger Shark cup needs emptying less often in a busy home. Our guides on emptying a Dyson and cleaning a Shark cover the details.
Filters on both are washable. Rinse them in cold water as the manual says and let them dry fully, usually for at least 24 hours, before refitting. A damp filter is the most common cause of smells and lost suction on both brands.
Which home suits each one
A one or two bedroom flat with mixed floors suits the V8 well. Forty minutes in Eco is plenty, the small bin is emptied after each clean anyway, and the compact handheld is handy for sofas, cars and shelves.
A three or four bedroom house, especially with stairs and carpet, suits the PowerPro better. The longer runtime, larger cup and the option to swap in a charged second battery make a full-house clean in one session more realistic. The bending wand is also kinder on the back when you clean under beds.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Shark PowerPro better than the Dyson V8? It lists longer runtime, a bigger dust cup, a bending wand and a removable battery. The V8 is more compact and nimble. The better choice depends on home size.
Can I buy a spare battery for either? Yes for both, but the Shark's clicks in and out by hand, while the V8's is fixed with screws.
Which is better for stairs? Both convert to a handheld. The V8 is the more compact handheld for stairs; see our stairs guide for other options.
Does the V8 stand up on its own? No. It is usually stored on its wall dock. The PowerPro folds and stands by itself.
