In short
Hold the Dyson over the bin, point it down and press or pull the red bin release so the bin base opens and the debris drops out. On the V8 the cyclone slides up as the base opens; on in-line models like the V10, V11, V15 and Gen5 the bin slides forward. Empty before debris reaches the MAX line.

Emptying a Dyson cordless should take seconds, but it can be messy if you do it the wrong way. Dyson has used two bin designs on recent models. The V8 style has the bin under the handle, and the in-line style, from the V10 onwards, has the bin in line with the wand. Both use a red release so you do not have to touch the debris. This guide covers how each one works, how to empty without a dust cloud, and what to do when hair and dust stick. Check your manual for the exact release on your model.
Before you start
Empty over an outdoor bin if you can, or a kitchen bin lined with a bag. Detach the wand on in-line models if your manual suggests it, as some bins open more easily without it. Empty when debris reaches the MAX line, not after it is packed full, as overfilling cuts suction.
- Hold the bin inside the bin bag to stop dust escaping.
- Do not empty in a draught.
- Never empty when the vacuum is running.
V8 style models
On V8 models the bin sits under the handle. To empty, hold the vacuum by the handle over the bin, then push the red release lever firmly. The cyclone slides up and the bin base opens, so debris falls out and the shroud wipes hair off the cyclone as it moves.
Close the base by pushing it shut until it clicks. If the lever feels stiff, check for hair caught around the shroud.
- 1
Hold the vacuum by the handle over the bin.
- 2
Push the red release lever firmly.
- 3
Shake gently if debris sticks.
- 4
Push the bin base closed until it clicks.
In-line models: V10, V11, V15 and Gen5
On in-line models the bin sits in a straight line with the wand. Point the vacuum down into the bin and push the red bin release. The bin slides forward and the base opens, so debris drops straight down. Dyson calls this a point and shoot design.
Close the bin base until it clicks and slide the bin back into place. Some models can have the bin fully removed for washing; see your manual.
Emptying without a dust cloud
Fine dust escapes when you empty from a height. Put the bin end deep inside the bin bag before you press the release, then close the bag around it. Wait a moment for dust to settle before you lift the vacuum out.
Emptying outdoors helps on a calm day, and a lined bin with a lid keeps the dust in once you are done.
When debris sticks
Hair and fluff can wrap around the cyclone shroud and stay in the bin after emptying. Pull it out by hand or with a soft brush. On models where the bin comes off, you can remove it and wipe it with a damp cloth.
Let any washed parts dry fully before you refit them. Never wash the cyclone assembly or motor, and never put parts in a dishwasher. Our Dyson cleaning guide covers the filters.
How often to empty
Empty after every clean, or when debris reaches the MAX line. A full bin restricts airflow and can make the vacuum pulse or cut out. In homes with pets, you may need to empty partway through a clean.
If you find yourself emptying often, a model with a bigger bin or a self-emptying dock may suit you better. Our self-emptying dock guide lists the options.
Common emptying mistakes
The most common mistake is letting debris pack above the MAX line. A packed bin is harder to empty, more likely to jam the release and reduces suction while you clean. Another is emptying with the vacuum still connected to a charger or dock, which can strain the dock and the charging contacts.
Some people try to pull hair out of the cyclone with a sharp tool. Avoid this, as you can damage the mesh shroud. Use your fingers or a soft brush instead, and if hair is wound tightly, cut it carefully with scissors away from the mesh. Finally, never rinse the main body under a tap; only parts your manual lists as washable should get wet.
