The Dyson V8 has been sold with several floor heads over the years, including the Direct Drive head, the Soft Roller head, the Motorhead and the newer de-tangling Motorbar. Heads can be swapped in seconds, which is handy for switching between carpet and hard floors, and replaced when one wears out or fails. This guide explains which heads fit a V8, how to remove and fit one, what to check before replacing a head that has stopped working, and how to choose the right replacement.

Which heads fit the V8

The V8 uses the same click-in fitting as the V7. Heads made for the V10, V11, V15 and later models use a different fitting and will not fit without an adapter. Check compatibility on Dyson's site or the listing before you buy.

How to remove and fit a head

Changing a head takes a few seconds and needs no tools. The same steps work for the mini motorised tool and the other V8 tools.

  1. 1

Switch off and lay the vacuum down or hang it on the dock.

  2. 2

Press the red release button on the end of the wand where it meets the head.

  3. 3

Pull the head away from the wand.

  4. 4

Line up the new head with the wand and push until it clicks.

  5. 5

Test it on the floor in Eco mode.

Check before replacing a head

If your head has stopped spinning or works only now and then, the head may not be broken. Hair wrapped around the brush bar, a blockage in the neck, or dirt on the electrical contacts can all stop it working.

Remove the battery or switch off, take out the brush bar, clear hair from the bar and its ends, and check the neck for blockages. Wipe the contacts on the head and wand with a dry cloth. Our brush bar guide shows how.

Note:Always switch off before reaching into the head or removing the brush bar.

Signs the head needs replacing

Replace the head if the brush bar no longer spins after cleaning, the head makes a grinding noise, the bristles are badly worn, or the housing is cracked. A head whose motor has failed usually cannot be repaired cheaply at home.

Also consider a new head if you have changed floors. If you have moved from carpet to hard floors, a Soft Roller head picks up larger debris and fine dust better than a bristle head. Our Dyson heads explainer explains the differences.

Choosing a replacement

Genuine Dyson heads are the safest option and fit without problems. Third-party heads are cheaper, but quality varies, and some have weaker motors or poor fit. If you choose one, buy from a reputable seller that clearly lists the V8 as compatible.

Check whether you need a motorised head or a non-motorised one. The V8's main floor heads are motorised and draw power from the battery through the wand.

Is it time for a new vacuum?

A V8 with a worn battery and a failed head may cost almost as much to repair as a newer model. If your V8 is several years old, compare the cost of a head and battery with a newer Dyson or a rival. Our Dyson V8 vs V11 comparison explains what you gain from upgrading.

If your V8 is otherwise working well, a new head is usually a cheap way to keep it going. Our V8 battery guide covers the battery side.

Looking after your heads

Check the brush bar for hair once a month, more often with pets. Empty the bin before it is packed full, as reduced airflow makes the motor in the head work harder. Store heads on the dock clips or in a dry cupboard.

Do not wash a motorised head. Soft Roller heads on some models have a removable roller that can be rinsed; check your manual and let it dry fully before refitting.

Which Dyson V8 head is for carpet? The Direct Drive head, Motorhead or de-tangling Motorbar. The Soft Roller is for hard floors.
