In short
Use a soft roller head, often called Fluffy, on hard floors, a motorised bristle head such as the Motorbar, Torque drive or High Torque on carpet, and the Hair screw tool or mini motorised tool on sofas, beds and stairs. The de-tangling heads and the conical Hair screw tool are Dyson's anti-tangle options. Which heads you get depends on the model and edition.

Dyson sells its cordless sticks with different sets of heads and tools, and the names change between generations: Direct drive, Motorbar, Torque drive, High Torque, Digital Motorbar, Fluffy, Laser Slim Fluffy and Fluffy Optic. Underneath the names there are really two kinds of floor head, plus a set of small tools for furniture and stairs. This guide explains each one, the surface it suits and which models typically include it. Bundles vary by edition and retailer, so treat the model lists as a guide and check the box contents before you buy.
The two kinds of Dyson floor head
Every Dyson floor head is one of two types. Motorised bristle heads have a brush bar with stiff nylon bristles, often mixed with carbon fibre filaments, driven by a motor in the head. They dig into carpet pile to lift dust, grit and hair. Soft roller heads have a roller covered in soft nylon felt and carbon fibre. They are designed for hard floors, where they pick up fine dust and larger debris together without scattering it.
Using the right type makes more difference than suction power. A soft roller on carpet barely agitates the pile; a stiff bristle head on a smooth floor can push larger crumbs around. Many Absolute and Detect editions come with both types so you can swap by floor.

Which head for hard floors, including on a V8
On hard floors, the soft roller head is the best choice on any Dyson that has one. On a V15 or V12 Detect, that means the Laser Slim Fluffy head, which lights up fine dust; on the Gen5 Detect, the Fluffy Optic head. Our laser head explainer covers how the light works.
Many V8 owners ask which head to use on hard floors. If your V8 is an Absolute edition, it came with a soft roller head; use it on wood, laminate, vinyl and tiles. The V8 Origin listing includes only a De-tangling Motorbar head, which works on hard floors but is designed mainly for carpet. Dyson sells soft roller heads as accessories for several models, but check compatibility with your exact V8 before buying. Our hard floor guide lists machines that include a soft roller as standard.
Which head for carpet and stairs
For carpet, use the motorised bristle head. Newer heads such as the High Torque and Digital Motorbar work with Auto mode on supported models, where the machine adjusts power to the floor. The V15 Detect Animal listing describes its High Torque head monitoring brush bar resistance 360 times a second in Auto mode. The V10 Animal listing describes its Torque drive head as driving bristles deep into carpet.
For carpeted stairs, convert to handheld and use the mini motorised tool or Hair screw tool. A small motorised brush agitates each tread and riser far better than a plain combination tool. Our stairs guide covers the lightest and most manageable options.
Which head for a sofa, bed or mattress
For upholstery, beds and mattresses, use a small motorised tool. On a V12 Detect Slim or V15 Detect, that is usually the Hair screw tool if your edition includes it; otherwise the mini motorised tool or the combination tool for lighter work. The Hair screw tool's conical brush bar is designed to spiral long hair towards the narrow end and into the bin, rather than wrapping it round the bar.
Use a lower power mode on soft furnishings so the tool does not grip the fabric too hard, and check the care label of the sofa or mattress before vacuuming. Dyson has also sold dedicated mattress tools for some models; check its accessories pages for what fits yours.
Anti-tangle heads explained
Hair wrapped round the brush bar is one of the most common complaints with any stick vacuum. Dyson's answer comes in two forms. The de-tangling heads, such as the De-tangling Motorbar, the Digital Motorbar and the High Torque head on the V15 Detect Animal, use a comb that clears hair from the brush bar as it spins. The Hair screw tool uses a conical brush bar that spirals hair off the end.
These designs reduce wrapping but do not stop it completely, especially with very long hair or thread. If hair does build up, remove the brush bar as your manual describes and clear it by hand. Our pet hair guide compares the strongest anti-tangle machines.
Note:Before removing or cleaning any head, switch off and remove the battery where your model allows it. Never cut hair from a brush bar while it is attached to a powered machine, and let washed soft rollers dry fully before refitting.
