Shark sells two upper cordless lines in the UK, the Stratos and the PowerDetect, and both come in several editions. They share a lot: removable batteries, anti hair wrap brush rolls and automatic power. The main difference is the floor head and the sensors built into it. This guide uses the Amazon UK listings for the Shark Stratos Pet Pro IZ400UKTBK and the Shark PowerDetect Cordless Pet to explain which suits which home.

The listings side by side

The PowerDetect listing does not give runtime or bin size, so we leave those blank rather than guess. Check Shark's site for the edition you are buying.

DuoClean against a single brush roll

DuoClean puts a soft front roller and a bristle brush roll in one head. The soft roller grips larger debris and dust on hard floors, while the brush roll works into carpet. That makes the Stratos a strong all-rounder for homes that mix laminate, tiles and rugs.

The PowerDetect head uses a single brush roll with combs that clear hair as it spins. It focuses on carpets and pet hair, and EdgeDetect boosts suction along skirting boards. If your home is mostly carpet with pets, the PowerDetect approach suits it well. Our cleaner heads explainer covers how roller and brush heads differ.

Sensors and automatic power

Both lines adjust power automatically. Clean Sense IQ on the Stratos senses dirt and raises power when there is more of it. The PowerDetect adds FloorDetect to change brush roll speed on carpet and hard floor, and EdgeDetect for edges. In daily use, both mean less switching between modes by hand.

Automatic modes use more battery when they ramp up on dirty carpet, so runtime with the main head varies from home to home.

Hair, odour and storage

Both lines use Shark's anti hair wrap design. The PowerDetect listing describes Anti Hair Wrap Plus with a chevron brush and internal combs. The Stratos adds an anti-odour cartridge in the dust cup, which is aimed at pet homes.

For storage, the PowerDetect's Flexology wand folds so the vacuum stands on its own. The Stratos Pet Pro listing does not mention Flexology, so check the edition. Some editions of both lines come with a self-emptying dock; our self-emptying dock guide lists those.

Which Shark should you buy?

Choose the Stratos if you have a lot of hard floor, mixed surfaces and want one head for everything. Choose the PowerDetect if you have mainly carpet, pets that shed and want the bending wand for under furniture.

Shark's range changes often and edition names are long. Compare the model codes on the box and our Shark comparison before you buy.

Emptying, filters and upkeep

Both lines have a dust cup that releases with a button so you can empty it straight into the bin. Shark's manuals recommend rinsing the washable filters regularly and letting them dry fully before refitting. The Stratos also has an anti-odour cartridge, which Shark says should be replaced periodically; check the manual for the interval.

Anti hair wrap brush rolls reduce tangles but do not end maintenance. Hair and thread can still collect at the ends of the roll, so lift the head every few weeks and clear it. Our Shark cleaning guide walks through each step.

Edition names explained

Shark adds suffixes to model codes to show what is in the box. A Pet edition usually adds a pet tool, a car kit edition adds small tools for car interiors, and some editions add a second battery. Clean and Empty or auto-empty editions add a dock that pulls debris from the dust cup.

These extras change the price more than the cleaning. If you do not need a second battery or a dock, a basic edition of either line gives the same floor head and sensors for less. Always compare the full model code, not just the line name, before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

Is the PowerDetect newer than the Stratos? The PowerDetect line arrived after the Stratos and adds more sensors, but both are current lines in the UK with several editions.

Which is better for pet hair? Both handle pet hair well. The PowerDetect's combs and EdgeDetect suit carpeted pet homes; the Stratos adds an anti-odour cartridge.

Do both have removable batteries? Yes. Both batteries click out so you can charge them off the vacuum.

Which is better for hard floors? The Stratos, thanks to the soft front roller in its DuoClean head.
