Runtime is one of the main differences between Dyson's cordless models, and one of the most misunderstood. The figures on the box are real, but they apply to specific conditions: the lowest power mode with a non-motorised tool. With the main floor head on carpet, or in Boost, the battery runs down much faster. This guide lists Dyson's maximum runtimes by model, explains what affects real runtime, and covers why batteries seem to die faster as they age.

Maximum runtime by model

These are Dyson's published or listed maximums. They apply in Eco with a non-motorised tool.

Why real runtime is shorter

Motorised floor heads draw power from the battery to spin the brush bar, so runtime with the main head is shorter than with a plain tool. Higher modes use more power. Auto modes on newer Dysons raise suction on carpet and when the sensor detects more dust, which also shortens runtime.

As a rough guide, expect the main head in Eco or Auto to give noticeably less than the maximum, and Boost to give only a few minutes. The screen on the V11, V12, V15 and Gen5 shows remaining minutes for the current mode, which is the best real-world guide. Our runtime explainer explains the maths.

How long it takes to clean your home

Most people need less runtime than they think. A typical clean of a flat takes 10 to 20 minutes; a three bedroom house with stairs may take 30 to 45 minutes. Use Eco on hard floors and switch up only on carpet to stretch the battery.

Our runtime planner estimates whether one charge covers your home based on rooms, stairs and modes.

Why Dyson batteries seem to die faster over time

All lithium-ion batteries lose capacity with age and with each charge cycle. After a few years, a battery that gave 60 minutes may give noticeably less. Heat, leaving the battery flat for long periods and heavy use of Boost all speed this up.

Blockages and dirty filters also make the motor work harder and drain the battery faster, which can look like battery wear. Clean the filter and check for blockages before deciding the battery is worn. Our Dyson not turning on article covers related checks.

Replacing a Dyson battery

Dyson sells replacement batteries for its cordless models. On the V8 and V10 the battery is fixed with screws; on many later models, including some V11 and V15 editions, it clicks in and out by hand. Check your model before buying.

A new battery restores runtime close to new. Our V8 battery replacement guide shows the process on one popular model.

Note:Use genuine or clearly compatible batteries. Do not use a battery that is swollen or damaged, and recycle old batteries at a battery recycling point, not in household waste.

Making your battery last

Use Eco for most cleaning, save Boost for stubborn spots, and keep the filter and brush bar clean. Store the vacuum indoors at room temperature and charge it after use rather than leaving it flat.

If you regularly run out of battery, consider a model with a longer runtime or a swappable battery. Our swappable batteries guide and Dyson comparison list the options.

Comparing Dyson runtime with rivals

Some rivals list longer maximum runtimes than Dyson. The Dreame Z20 lists up to 90 minutes, and several Shark, Samsung and Bosch models offer removable batteries so you can double runtime with a spare. As with Dyson, these maximums apply in the lowest mode.

Our long runtime guide compares models on both eco and boost runtimes.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Dyson V8 battery last? Up to 40 minutes per charge in Eco with a non-motorised tool, less with the motorised head.

How long does a Dyson V15 battery last? Up to 60 minutes in Eco with a non-motorised tool. The screen shows remaining minutes for your mode.

Why does my Dyson battery die so fast? Boost mode, motorised heads, blockages and battery age all shorten runtime.

How many years does a Dyson battery last? Typically several years, depending on use and care. Capacity falls gradually.
