A Dyson that will not start is frustrating, but the cause is usually simple. Dyson cordless models protect their motor and battery by shutting down when something is wrong, so a dead machine is often a warning rather than a failure. This guide works through the checks in the order that solves most cases, for trigger models such as the V8, V10, V11 and V15 Detect, and for newer button models. Procedures differ between models, so keep your manual or Dyson's support pages to hand.

Quick checks before anything else

Start with the simple things. They solve a surprising number of cases.

  1. 1

Put the vacuum on charge for at least a few hours, then try again.

  2. 2

Check the charger light or battery lights come on when connected. No light suggests a charger, socket or connection fault.

  3. 3

Try a different wall socket you know works.

  4. 4

Check the battery is fully seated. On click-in battery models, remove it and click it back in firmly.

  5. 5

On trigger models, pull the trigger fully. On button models, press the power button once firmly.

Battery and charger faults

If the machine shows no lights at all on charge, the charger or its connection is the likely fault. Look at the charging port for fluff or damage and check the cable for kinks. A replacement charger from Dyson for your model is a cheap first test if you have no spare.

If it charges but runs for only a few seconds, or the lights show a battery fault, the battery is likely worn. Batteries lose capacity with age and use, and Dyson batteries typically last several years. Our Dyson V8 battery guide shows how a replacement works on one common model.

Note:Only use genuine or clearly compatible chargers and batteries. Do not charge a battery that is swollen, hot or damaged, and keep it away from heat. Lithium-ion batteries should never go in household waste. Take old packs to a battery recycling point or your local household recycling centre.

Blockages and motor protection

If the vacuum starts and stops straight away, or pulses on and off, a blockage is the usual cause. When airflow is restricted, the motor shuts down to protect itself. Our Dyson pulsing article covers this symptom in depth.

Empty the bin, then check for blockages in the bin inlet, the wand and the floor head. Drop a coin through the wand: if it does not fall through, something is stuck. Wash and fully dry the filters, as a clogged filter restricts airflow just like a blockage.

  1. 1

    Empty the bin.

  2. 2

Remove the wand and look through it.

  3. 3

Remove the floor head and check its neck and brush bar.

  4. 4

Take out the filter, rinse it in cold water and let it dry for at least 24 hours.

  5. 5

    Refit everything and test.

Overheating and thermal cut-out

Dyson motors cut out if they get too hot, for example after a long clean on Boost or when a blockage has made the motor work harder. The vacuum will refuse to start until it cools. Leave it unplugged in a cool room for an hour or so, clear any blockages, then try again.

If it overheats often, look for a hidden blockage or a dirty filter, and use Boost only where you need it. Our runtime explainer covers how modes affect heat and battery.

Trigger and button problems

On trigger models, a worn or sticking trigger can stop the machine starting. If you hear a click but nothing happens, or it starts only with the trigger pulled at an angle, the trigger mechanism may be faulty. On button models, a power button that does not respond may point to a battery or electronics fault.

Do not open the motor housing yourself. Trigger and electronic faults are usually a repair for Dyson or an authorised repairer, especially if the machine is still under guarantee.

When to contact Dyson

If you have charged, checked the charger, cleared blockages, cleaned filters and let the machine cool, and it still will not turn on, contact Dyson support with your serial number. The serial number is usually on a sticker on the main body or behind the bin. Dyson's online troubleshooting asks about light patterns, which helps narrow down the fault.

If the machine is out of guarantee and the fault is the battery, a replacement can give it years more life. If it is older and has more than one fault, compare repair costs with a new model. Our Dyson cordless comparison lists current models.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my Dyson turn on when it is fully charged? A blockage, a clogged filter or an overheated motor can stop it starting. Clear the airflow path, clean the filter and let it cool.

How do I know if my Dyson battery is dead? If it charges but runs for only seconds, or shows a battery fault light, the battery is likely worn and needs replacing.

Can a Dyson cut out from overheating? Yes. The motor protects itself and will not restart until it cools, usually within an hour.

Where is the serial number on a Dyson cordless? Usually on a sticker on the main body or behind the bin. Check Dyson's support pages for your model.
