The Hoover HW400 is not a conventional stick vacuum. It is a cordless wet and dry floor cleaner that picks up dust, crumbs and spills while washing hard floors in a single pass. It is best suited to kitchens, hallways and open-plan homes with tile, vinyl or sealed wood, where a separate vacuum then mop routine takes up time each day.

In its favour
- It picks up dust, dirt and liquids in one step on hard floors, so no separate mopping.
- Self-cleaning at 70C with a 30 minute roller dry, according to the listing.
- Lies flat to 180 degrees to reach under furniture, with active edges on three sides.
Good to know
- It is a hard floor machine, not a carpet vacuum, so carpeted homes still need a stick.
- Water tank volumes are not stated beyond the 0.6 L capacity figure.
Our take
How a wet and dry cleaner differs
Instead of a brush bar spinning dry, the HW400 uses a roller that is kept damp, so it lifts dry debris and liquids at the same time. Hoover rates it at 17,000 Pa, with the footnote that this is measured at the motor inlet.
The head is active on three sides, which Hoover calls triple edge cleaning, so it can work right up to skirting boards and into corners. The handle lies flat to 180 degrees, letting the head reach under low units and beds.
Self-cleaning and maintenance
After cleaning, the HW400 washes its own roller at 70C and then dries it for 30 minutes. That is the feature that most separates it from cheaper wet cleaners, since a damp roller left in its dock can start to smell.
Hoover also says the nozzle and roller can be immersed in water for a deeper clean by hand. The box includes a charging dock, a cleaning brush, detergent, a HEPA filter and the rotating brush. The tank capacity is listed as 0.6 litres.
Runtime and size
Up to 50 minutes is quoted, which Hoover says covers about 300 square metres in one pass at a steady walking pace. The battery is built in and takes four hours to charge.
The machine weighs 3.5 kg and stands 113.4 cm tall. A smart LED display and four power levels are listed. Hoover states spare parts will be available in the EU for 13 years, which is a useful sign of longevity.
HW400 against the Tineco Floor One S5 and Samsung Wet&Clean
The Tineco Floor One S5 is another dedicated floor washer, with iLoop sensing that adjusts suction, water flow and roller speed, and a larger 0.8 litre clean tank, but it lists only 25 minutes of runtime.
The Samsung Bespoke AI Jet Wet&Clean is a stick vacuum with a mop head added, giving you proper carpet cleaning as well as wet cleaning, plus two batteries.
Verdict
The HW400 is a strong option for homes that are mostly hard floor, where washing as you vacuum saves a separate job, and the hot self-clean makes upkeep easier. If you want sensing that adjusts water flow, look at the Tineco Floor One S5, and if carpet is part of the mix, the Samsung Bespoke AI Jet Wet&Clean covers both.
