The V12 Detect Slim Origin is aimed at people who want Dyson's dust sensing without the bulk of the V15. Dyson describes it as its lightest intelligent cordless vacuum, 24% lighter than the V15, and the listing gives 2.36 kg. What sets it apart in a small home is the pair of heads in the box: one built to show up fine dust on hard floors and one for carpets and long hair.

Our take

What the two floor heads are for

The Fluffy Optic cleaner head is the hard floor tool. According to Dyson it reveals hidden dust on hard floors, which is useful on wood, laminate or tiles where crumbs and grit are hard to spot in normal room light.

The second head is a Motorbar, which Dyson says deep cleans all floor types and de-tangles long hair and pet hair as it goes. Having both means you can switch heads between a kitchen floor and a bedroom rug rather than compromising with one brush for everything.

Sensing, screen and runtime

The vacuum adapts its power to the debris it detects, and the LCD screen shows a running total of particles picked up. The same screen displays the power mode, maintenance alerts and the remaining runtime to the second, so you know whether there is enough charge to finish the stairs.

Dyson states up to 60 minutes of run time and 30% more power, measured against an earlier model. Operation is by a power button for continuous cleaning rather than a trigger you have to hold, which is easier on the hand during a longer session.

Handheld use and the Hair screw tool

The stick converts to a handheld for cars, stairs and upholstery. The Hair screw tool has an anti-tangle conical brush bar that spirals long hair and pet hair off itself, and Dyson lists it for pet beds, car seats and stairs.

One gap in the listing is bin size. It is given only as 0.1 gallons, with no litre figure, and there is no mention of a wall dock or whether the battery can be swapped. Check those points on the box contents before buying if storage matters.

Against the Dyson V8 Origin and Dreame Z30 Ultra

The Dyson V8 Origin is the simpler Dyson for a flat. It has a wall dock and a 0.54 L bin, but only one floor head, no screen and up to 40 minutes measured with a non-motorised tool.

The Dreame Z30 Ultra lists a much higher 330 AW suction figure, up to 90 minutes and a lit universal brush that reads the floor type. It does not count particles on a screen, which is the feature the V12 is built around.

Verdict

Choose the V12 Detect Slim Origin if you have mostly hard floors with a few rugs and want a light Dyson that shows you the dust and tells you how much is left on the battery. If you need a wall dock and a simpler machine, the Dyson V8 Origin fits a flat well, and if long runtime and a high suction figure matter more, look at the Dreame Z30 Ultra.
