The Dyson V8 Animal works well for anyone who cleans carpeted stairs regularly and wants something light enough to hold at awkward angles. It is listed at 2 kg, and the bundle includes a mini motorised tool that fits a stair tread neatly. Dyson is also upfront that runtime drops to about 25 minutes with a motorised head, which makes planning easier.

In its favour

- Dyson states up to 25 minutes with the motorised floor tool, a realistic planning figure.
- A hygienic dirt ejector empties the bin in a single action.
Good to know
- 40 minutes of maximum runtime is short for a large house plus stairs.
- Listed noise of 78 dB and an older V8 motor design.
Our take
Runtime, stated honestly
The listing quotes up to 40 minutes of suction from a Nickel Cobalt Aluminium battery, then adds that the figure falls to up to 25 minutes with the motorised floor tool attached. Many listings only give the best case, so this is useful.
For a full staircase plus landing, 25 minutes with the mini motorised tool should be workable. A whole house on the main head may need a charge part way through.
Heads and tools in the box
Five items come with the vacuum: a Direct Drive cleaner head, a mini motorised tool, a docking station, a combination tool and a rigid crevice tool. Dyson claims the Direct Drive head has 150% more brush bar power than the V6 Animal, driving bristles deeper into carpet.
The crevice tool reaches into the corners of each step, while the combination tool handles banisters and skirting.
Bin, filter and charging
The bin holds 0.54 litres and empties with a single-action dirt ejector, and the features list includes a full reservoir indicator. Whole-machine filtration is said to capture allergens and expel cleaner air, though the filter type is listed as cartridge.
The noise level is 78 decibels. The spec table gives a charge time of 40 minutes, which is unusually short for this battery, so it is worth confirming.
V8 Animal against the V10 Animal and Shark PowerPro
The Dyson V10 Animal also includes a mini motorised tool and offers up to 60 minutes, three modes and a larger 0.76 litre bin, at 2.66 kg. It suits bigger homes better.
The Shark PowerPro has a removable battery and a bending wand, but at a listed 3.45 kg it is heavier to carry up a flight.
Verdict
Pick the V8 Animal if stairs are a regular job and you want the lightest machine with a proper motorised tool for treads. If the stairs are part of a large house, the Dyson V10 Animal gives longer runtime and a bigger bin, and the Shark PowerPro suits homes where reaching under furniture matters more than weight.
