In short
When a Vax cordless stops working, check the battery is charged and clicked in, the charger light comes on, the bin is empty, the wand and head are clear, the filters are clean and dry, and the brush bar spins freely. Most ONEPWR and Blade faults come from one of these. If it still fails, contact Vax with the model number.

Vax is a long-standing UK brand, and its cordless sticks, including the ONEPWR range and the Blade models, are common in British homes. Many current Vax cordless models use the ONEPWR battery system, which shares batteries across several Vax machines. When a Vax stops working, the cause is usually the battery, a blockage or a dirty filter. This guide works through the checks in order. Models vary, so keep your manual handy.
Battery and charging checks
Start with power. Most problems that look like a dead vacuum are battery or charging issues.
- 1
Charge the battery fully and watch the charge indicator.
- 2
Remove the battery, check the contacts for dirt, and click it back in firmly.
- 3
Try another socket and check the charger cable.
- 4
If you have another ONEPWR battery from a compatible Vax machine, try it.
- 5
Let the vacuum cool if it stopped after a long clean on high power.
Note:Do not use a battery that is swollen, damaged or very hot. Lithium-ion batteries should go to a battery recycling point, not household waste.
Blockages
If the vacuum starts and stops, or runs but picks up nothing, look for a blockage. Empty the bin, then check the bin inlet, the wand and the neck of the floor head. Drop a small coin through the wand to check it is clear.
Pet hair, tissues and small toys are common culprits. Remove anything you find, refit the parts firmly and test again.
Filters
Vax cordless models use washable filters on many models. A clogged filter restricts airflow, cuts suction and can make the motor overheat and shut down. Remove the filters as your manual shows, tap off loose dust and rinse them in cold water if they are washable.
Let them dry fully, at least 24 hours, before refitting. Never refit a damp filter, as it can cause smells and damage. Our vacuum smell article explains why.
Brush bar problems
If the motor runs but the brush bar does not spin, hair or thread may have jammed it. Remove the battery, turn the head over and clear the brush bar. Many Vax heads let you remove the bar for cleaning. Check the end caps, where hair builds up.
If the bar is clear but still does not spin, check the connection between the head and the wand, and look for damage to the head. Our brush bar guide explains the steps.

Loss of suction
If the vacuum runs but suction is weak, the cause is nearly always a blockage, a full bin or a dirty filter. A poorly fitted bin or a cracked seal can also let air leak. Check that every part clicks fully into place.
Our lost suction article covers the checks in more detail, and they apply to Vax machines as well as other brands.
When to contact Vax
If none of these checks help, contact Vax support with your model number, which is on a label on the vacuum. Register your machine if you have not already, as guarantee terms depend on registration. Vax sells spare batteries, filters and heads for many models.
If repair is not worth it, our best cordless vacuums guide lists current alternatives.
Keeping a Vax cordless working
Simple habits prevent most faults. Empty the bin after every clean rather than waiting until it is packed full, because a full bin cuts airflow and makes the motor work harder. Rinse washable filters every few weeks and leave them to dry fully. Clear hair from the brush bar ends once a month, more often with pets.
Store the vacuum and any spare ONEPWR batteries indoors, away from radiators and cold garages, as lithium-ion packs do not like extremes of temperature. If you own several ONEPWR tools, rotate the batteries so no single pack does all the work. Our battery lifespan article has more tips.
Is it worth repairing?
A worn battery, a clogged filter or a damaged floor head are usually cheap to fix with genuine spares, and they can give a Vax several more years of use. Faults inside the motor or the main body are harder to repair at home and are best handled by Vax.
As a rule of thumb, if the vacuum is a few years old and only one part has failed, replace the part. If several parts are failing at once, or spares are hard to find, compare the cost with a new machine.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Vax cordless keep cutting out? Usually a blockage, a clogged filter or a worn battery. Clear the airflow path and clean the filters first.
Are Vax ONEPWR batteries interchangeable? Vax designs ONEPWR batteries to work across compatible machines in the range. Check your manual for compatibility.
Why is my Vax brush bar not spinning? Hair or debris has jammed it, or the head is not connecting to the wand properly.
How often should I wash Vax filters? Follow your manual. A rinse every few weeks with regular use keeps airflow strong.
