**In short:** There are three main types. Mop pads that clip onto a stick's floor head give a light damp wipe. Wet roller heads, such as Dyson's Submarine, wash sealed floors after you vacuum. Dedicated wet and dry cleaners vacuum and wash in one pass with clean and dirty water tanks. For large hard floors, a wet and dry cleaner does the most.

Searching for a cordless vacuum with a mop brings up very different machines. Some are ordinary sticks with a mop pad accessory. Some are sticks with a separate wet head. Others are dedicated wet and dry cleaners that vacuum and wash at the same time. Each suits a different home. This guide explains how each type works, which floors they suit, and what to consider before buying. Always check your flooring maker's advice on water before wet cleaning.

## The three types at a glance

These are general descriptions; check the details of each model.

| Type | How it works | Best for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Mop pad attachment | Damp pad clips to the floor head or a mop head | Light wipe of small areas |
| Wet roller head | Separate head with a water tank washes after vacuuming | Sealed hard floors, separate wash |
| Wet and dry cleaner | Vacuums and washes in one pass, two tanks | Large hard floors, kitchens |

Vacuum and mop types

## Mop pad attachments

Some sticks offer a mop attachment: a pad you dampen, sometimes fed from a small tank, that wipes the floor as you push. It is a light clean, good for footprints and dust, not for dried-on spills.

Mop pads are cheap and simple, but you need to wash or replace pads, and they do not pick up dirty water. They suit small kitchens and bathrooms where you want a quick wipe after vacuuming.

## Wet roller heads

Some sticks offer a wet roller head. Dyson's V15s Detect Submarine is one example, and some Samsung editions include a wet mop head. The head feeds clean water to a roller that wipes the floor, and a scraper moves dirty water into a tray.

You vacuum first, then swap heads to wash. This keeps one machine for both jobs, but it is two passes. Our [V15 vs V15s Submarine comparison](https://wandandfloor.co.uk/blog/dyson-v15-vs-v15s-submarine) covers one example in detail.

## Wet and dry cleaners

Wet and dry cleaners, from brands such as Dreame, Tineco and Hoover, have a clean water tank, a dirty water tank and a motorised roller. They spray, scrub and suck up dirty water in one pass, picking up crumbs and spills together. Many have self-cleaning cycles on their dock.

They are heavier than sticks and not suitable for carpet, but they save a lot of time on large hard floors. Our [wet and dry guide](https://wandandfloor.co.uk/best/best-wet-and-dry-cordless-vacuums) lists the options.

## Which floors suit wet cleaning

Wet cleaning suits sealed hard floors: tiles, vinyl, sealed stone, laminate and sealed wood, provided the flooring maker allows damp cleaning. Use as little water as the machine allows on laminate and wood, as standing water can damage them.

Do not wet clean unsealed wood, waxed floors, carpets or rugs. If you are unsure whether your floor is sealed, check with the maker or test in a hidden spot.

Note: Check your flooring maker's advice before wet cleaning. Do not use wet heads on carpets, rugs or unsealed wood.

## Upkeep and cleaning the machine

Any wet system needs cleaning after use. Empty dirty water, rinse tanks, and let rollers and pads dry fully. Wet and dry cleaners often have a self-clean cycle on the dock, and some dry the roller with warm air.

Leaving water in a tank or a damp roller in a cupboard quickly causes smells. Our [vacuum smell article](https://wandandfloor.co.uk/blog/vacuum-cleaner-smells) explains how to keep machines fresh.

## Which should you choose?

Choose a stick with a mop pad if you have small hard floor areas and want a quick wipe. Choose a wet roller head if you want one machine and do not mind two passes. Choose a wet and dry cleaner if you have large hard floors, a busy kitchen or children and pets that cause spills.

Many homes pair a stick for carpets and stairs with a wet and dry cleaner for hard floors. Our [hard floors guide](https://wandandfloor.co.uk/best/best-cordless-vacuums-for-hard-floors) lists sticks that suit wood, laminate and tiles.

**Can I use a wet and dry cleaner on carpet?** No. They are for sealed hard floors only.

**Is a vacuum mop safe for laminate?** Usually, with minimal water, if the laminate maker allows damp cleaning. Check first.
