# Why does my vacuum cleaner smell?

**In short:** Most vacuum smells come from dirt sitting in the bin, filters refitted while still damp, or hair and debris wrapped round the brush bar. Empty the bin, wash and fully dry the filters, and clear the brush bar. A burning smell is different: stop using the vacuum, remove the battery, and contact the maker or a qualified repairer.

A cordless vacuum moves a lot of air through a small space, so any smell inside it gets blown straight into the room. The good news is that most smells have simple causes: old dirt left in the bin, a filter that went back in before it was fully dry, or pet hair and fluff wound round the brush bar. A burning smell is the exception, and it needs a different response. This guide explains the common smells, what usually causes each one, and what to do. Model details differ, so check your manual for how your filters and brush bar come out.

## Match the smell to the cause

Different smells point to different parts of the machine. Use the table to narrow down where to look first.

| Smell | Usual cause | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Musty or damp | Filter refitted wet, or damp debris in bin | Dry filter fully, empty and dry bin |
| Doggy or stale | Pet hair and dirt in bin, filters or brush bar | Empty bin, wash filters, clear brush bar |
| Dusty or stale when first switched on | Dirty filters or cyclone | Wash filters, wipe cyclone dry |
| Hot or burning | Overheating, jammed brush bar, electrical or battery fault | Stop, remove battery, get help |

Common vacuum smells and their usual causes

## Musty smells: damp filters and bins

A musty smell almost always means something inside is damp. The usual culprit is a filter that was washed and refitted before it dried completely. Dyson commonly advises rinsing filters in cold water only, with no detergent, and drying them fully, typically for at least 24 hours. Shark gives similar advice for its washable filters. Check your manual for your model. Vacuuming up damp soil, spilt drinks or wet pet food can also leave moisture in the bin.

Take the filters out, let them dry fully in a warm, airy place away from direct heat, and empty the bin. If your bin detaches and your manual allows it, rinse it with plain water and let it dry completely before refitting. A standard stick vacuum is not designed for liquids, so use a wet and dry floor cleaner for spills instead. Our guides to [cleaning a Dyson](https://wandandfloor.co.uk/blog/how-to-clean-dyson-filters) and [cleaning a Shark cordless](https://wandandfloor.co.uk/blog/how-to-clean-shark-cordless) show the steps.

1. Remove the battery or switch off fully.
2. Empty the bin outdoors or into a bin bag.
3. Remove the filters and rinse them as your manual describes.
4. Leave filters to dry fully, typically at least 24 hours.
5. Rinse and dry the bin if it detaches and your manual allows.
6. Refit everything only when completely dry.

## Pet smells: hair, bin and brush bar

In homes with pets, the smell often comes from hair and dander building up in the bin, on the cyclone screen and round the brush bar. Even a few days of hair left in the bin can make the exhaust air smell. Empty the bin after every clean rather than waiting for the MAX line. Pull hair off the cyclone screen and remove the brush bar to clear any wrapped hair and fluff from the bar and its end caps.

Some models include features aimed at smells. The Shark Stratos Pet Pro, for example, has an anti-odour cartridge, which is replaced rather than washed. Check your manual for how often. ## Burning smell: stop using it

A burning or hot electrical smell is a warning sign. It can come from a motor working hard against a blockage, a brush bar jammed with string so the drive belt or motor strains, or an electrical or battery fault. Do not keep vacuuming to see if it goes away.

Switch off straight away and remove the battery if it is safe to do so. Put the vacuum somewhere away from anything flammable and let it cool. Once cool, you can check for an obvious blockage or a jammed brush bar. If you find one and clear it, test briefly on a low setting and stop at once if the smell returns. If you cannot find a cause, or the battery was hot, discoloured or swollen, do not use it again. Contact the maker or a qualified repairer.

Note: If your vacuum smells of burning, stop using it and remove the battery if safe. Do not charge a battery that is hot, swollen, damaged or smells of burning. Keep it away from heat and flammable materials and contact the maker or a qualified repairer. Do not open the motor or battery pack yourself. Recycle damaged or old batteries at a battery recycling point, never in household waste.

## Keeping smells away

A short routine prevents most smells. Empty the bin after every use, wash filters about once a month or as your manual says, and always let them dry fully before refitting. Clear the brush bar when hair builds up. Store the vacuum indoors in a dry place, not a damp garage or shed. Avoid vacuuming up liquids, wet soil or food waste with a standard stick vacuum. If you need to clean spills often, a separate wet and dry floor cleaner is the better tool. See our [wet and dry cordless vacuums](https://wandandfloor.co.uk/best/best-wet-and-dry-cordless-vacuums) guide for options.

- Empty the bin after every clean.
- Wash filters about monthly, or as your manual says.
- Dry filters fully, typically at least 24 hours.
- Clear the brush bar of hair and thread.
- Store indoors and dry.
- Keep liquids and wet debris out of a dry vacuum.

## Frequently asked questions

**Why does my vacuum cleaner smell bad?** Usually because of dirt sitting in the bin, a filter refitted while damp, or hair wrapped round the brush bar. Empty the bin, wash and dry the filters fully, and clear the brush bar.

**Why does my vacuum smell after washing the filter?** The filter probably went back in before it was fully dry. Remove it and let it dry longer in a warm, airy place. Many makers advise at least 24 hours.

**Why does my vacuum cleaner smell like burning?** It may be overheating, a jammed brush bar, or an electrical or battery fault. Stop using it, remove the battery if safe and let it cool. If you cannot find and clear an obvious jam, contact the maker or a qualified repairer.

**Can I spray air freshener into my vacuum?** It is best not to. Sprays add moisture and residue to filters and can affect airflow. Clean and dry the bin and filters instead, and check your manual before adding anything.
