**In short:** The Dyson V15 Detect is worth it if you have a mix of hard floors and carpet, want to see fine dust with the laser head, and value a big bin, long runtime and Dyson's spares network. It is not worth it if you have a small home with mostly carpet, mainly want long runtime for less, or would never use the screen and sensor.

The V15 Detect has been one of Dyson's best-known cordless sticks since around 2021, and it is still widely sold. It is also expensive, and newer models such as the Gen5 Detect and strong rivals from Dreame, Samsung and Shark compete at lower or similar prices. This guide sets out what the V15 does well, what you pay extra for, and which households get the most from it. It uses Dyson's published figures and Amazon UK listing facts, not test results.

## What you get with the V15 Detect

The V15 combines Dyson's high suction motor with several features that cheaper models lack.

- 230 AW of suction on Dyson's figures.
- Up to 60 minutes runtime in Eco with a non-motorised tool.
- A 0.76 litre bin.
- A laser Fluffy Optic head on editions that include it.
- A piezo sensor that counts dust particles and adjusts suction.
- An LCD screen showing runtime, mode and particle counts.
- Whole-machine HEPA filtration and a hair screw tool.

## Where the V15 is worth the money

Homes with a lot of hard floor benefit most from the laser head, which shows fine dust and hair you would otherwise miss. Mixed homes benefit from Auto mode, which adjusts suction between carpet and hard floor. Larger homes benefit from the bin and runtime.

Dyson's spares network is another point in its favour. Filters, batteries, heads and tools are widely available in the UK, which helps a V15 stay useful for years. Our [Dyson comparison](https://wandandfloor.co.uk/best/dyson-cordless-vacuums-compared) lists the current editions.

## Where it is not worth it

If your home is mostly carpeted, the laser adds little, and a V11 or V10 gives similar runtime and bin size for less. If you live in a small flat, the V15's size and weight may be more than you need; a V12 Detect Slim or V8 is lighter.

If long runtime matters most, rivals such as the Dreame Z20 list up to 90 minutes. If you want a spare battery as standard, many Shark, Samsung and Bosch editions include a second removable pack, while V15 battery design varies by edition, so check before you buy. ## V15 against the Gen5 Detect

The Gen5 Detect is Dyson's newer flagship, with higher quoted suction, longer quoted runtime and a power button instead of a trigger. It costs more. If the price gap is large, a discounted V15 is often the better value. Our [Gen5 vs V15 comparison](https://wandandfloor.co.uk/blog/dyson-gen5-vs-v15) sets out the differences.

## Weight and handling

The V15 is one of the heavier Dyson sticks, with the bin and battery in line with the wand. The V15 Detect Animal listing gives 3 kg. Some people find it tiring on stairs or for long cleans above floor level.

If weight is a concern, our [lightweight cordless guide](https://wandandfloor.co.uk/best/best-lightweight-cordless-vacuums) lists lighter models, and our [weight explainer](https://wandandfloor.co.uk/blog/cordless-vacuum-weight-explained) explains how to compare listing weights.

## Edition matters

The V15 is sold in several editions, such as Detect, Absolute, Animal and Submarine. They share the motor and sensor but differ in heads and tools. An edition without the Fluffy Optic head lacks the laser, which removes one of the main reasons to choose a V15.

Check the box list before you buy. Our [V15 models explainer](https://wandandfloor.co.uk/blog/dyson-v15-models-explained) explains the differences.

## Running costs over the years

A V15 has few running costs. The filter is washable, so there is no regular filter bill if you rinse and dry it as the manual says. Over several years, the battery is the part most likely to need replacing, and Dyson sells replacements for the V15. Brush bars and soft rollers can wear too, especially in pet homes.

When weighing value, think about how long you will keep the machine. A V15 that lasts many years with a battery change along the way can work out well against a cheaper stick replaced sooner. Our [cordless lifespan article](https://wandandfloor.co.uk/blog/how-long-do-cordless-vacuums-last) explains what affects how long a stick lasts.

## Buying at the right price

The V15 has been on sale for several years, so prices vary widely between retailers and editions. Discounts often appear around seasonal sales and when newer Dyson models launch. Compare the same edition across retailers, and check whether a slightly more expensive edition adds heads you will actually use.

Buying from Dyson or an authorised retailer makes guarantee claims straightforward. Register the machine with Dyson after purchase to activate the guarantee.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is the V15 Detect still worth buying?** Yes for mixed and hard-floor homes that want the laser and sensor. For mostly carpeted homes, cheaper Dysons or rivals are often better value.

**Does every V15 have a laser?** No. Only editions with the Fluffy Optic head have the laser. Check the box list.

**Is the V15 too heavy?** The V15 Detect Animal listing gives 3 kg. Lighter models suit people who find it tiring.

**Should I buy a V15 or a Gen5?** The Gen5 is newer with higher quoted figures. A discounted V15 often offers better value.
