**In short:** Anti-tangle heads stop long hair winding round the brush bar. Shark's Anti Hair Wrap uses combs that strip hair off the brush-roll as it spins, Dyson uses de-tangling combs or vanes on its floor heads and a conical brush bar that spirals hair off the end of its Hair screw tool. They cut down on cutting hair free with scissors, but very long hair, thread and string can still catch.

Anyone with long hair in the house, or a moulting dog, knows the problem: after a few weeks the brush bar is wrapped in a tight mat of hair that has to be cut away with scissors. Wrapped hair is not just untidy. It stops bristles reaching the carpet, so pick-up drops, and it adds drag that makes the head motor work harder. Most major brands now offer an anti-tangle head. They use different ideas to reach the same goal. This guide explains how Shark's combs, Dyson's de-tangling heads and conical bar and other designs work, what to look for when buying, and the honest limits of each.

## Why hair wraps round a brush bar

A conventional brush bar is a cylinder with rows of bristles that spins quickly against the floor. Long hair caught by the bristles is pulled along with the rotation. Because the bar keeps turning, each strand winds round it like thread on a bobbin. The airflow into the head is not strong enough to pull a strand off once it has started to wrap, so the coil gets tighter and thicker with every clean.

Hair from people tends to be longer than pet hair, so it wraps more readily. Short, coarse dog hair can still work its way between bristles and build up at the ends of the bar, where the bearings sit. Anti-tangle designs tackle one or both of these: stopping hair from wrapping in the first place, or removing it continuously so it goes into the bin.

## Shark Anti Hair Wrap and Anti Hair Wrap Plus

Shark's approach uses a comb that sits against the spinning brush-roll. As the roll turns, the comb's teeth pull hair away from the bristles so it is drawn into the airflow and on to the dust cup. Shark describes Anti Hair Wrap on models such as the PowerPro as removing hair from the brush-roll as you clean.

Anti Hair Wrap Plus is the newer version. On the PowerDetect Cordless Pet, Shark describes a brush-roll with a chevron pattern and internal combs that actively remove hair, both pet and human. The chevron shape guides hair towards the centre of the roll, where the combs lift it away. The Stratos Pet Pro uses an Anti Hair Wrap DuoClean floorhead with two motorised brush-rolls: a soft front roller and a bristle roll, which helps on both carpet and hard floors.

## Dyson de-tangling heads and the conical brush bar

Dyson uses several designs depending on the model. On the V15 Detect Animal, the High Torque cleaner head has what Dyson calls anti-tangle technology, with a de-tangling comb that automatically clears hair from the brush bar. The V8 Origin's De-tangling Motorbar head uses polycarbonate hair removal vanes that lift and spiral long hair off the bar and into the bin.

The Hair screw tool, included with the V15 Detect Animal, takes a different route. Its brush bar is conical, wider at one end than the other. As it spins, hair naturally travels along the cone towards the narrow end and comes off into the airflow, rather than winding round in one place. Dyson describes it as an anti-tangle conical brush bar that spirals hair off and into the bin. It is a small handheld tool, best for stairs, upholstery, pet beds and car seats.

## Other brands and designs compared

Samsung describes the Jet Dual Brush on Bespoke Jet models as picking up pet hair without tangling. Black and Decker's POWERSERIES Extreme MAX uses an anti-tangle beater bar to help reduce hair wrap. Some heads simply use rubber fins or a mix of rubber and bristle that hair slides off more easily. Each maker words its claims differently, so read the listing closely: some promise to remove hair, others to reduce wrap.

| Design | Example | How it works | Best for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Comb against brush-roll | Shark Anti Hair Wrap | Comb teeth strip hair from the roll as it spins | Long human and pet hair on carpet |
| Chevron roll with internal combs | Shark Anti Hair Wrap Plus | Chevron guides hair to the centre, combs lift it | Mixed floors, long hair |
| De-tangling comb or vanes | Dyson High Torque head, De-tangling Motorbar | Comb or vanes lift hair off the bar | Main floor head on carpet |
| Conical brush bar | Dyson Hair screw tool | Hair spirals to the narrow end and off | Stairs, upholstery, pet beds |
| Rubber fins or mixed bristles | Various brands | Hair slides off smooth surfaces more easily | Lighter hair loads |

## The limits of anti-tangle technology

No design is perfect. Anti-tangle heads greatly reduce how often you need scissors, but they rarely make the brush bar maintenance-free. Expect these limits:

If a lot of hair is still wrapping, check that the comb or vanes are not blocked or damaged, that the brush-roll is seated correctly, and that you are using the right head for the job. Some makers sell replacement brush-rolls for worn heads.

- **Very long hair:** strands longer than the bar's circumference can still catch, especially if hair builds up faster than the comb can clear it.
- **Thread, string and carpet fibres:** these are stronger than hair and can still wind round the bar or the end caps.
- **The bar ends:** hair can collect where the brush-roll meets the end bearings, which combs do not always reach.
- **Soft rollers:** fluffy hard-floor rollers can still collect hair in their fabric, though they usually release it more easily.
- **Boost and speed:** fast passes on deep pile push more hair onto the bar at once. Slower passes give the comb time to work.

Note: Always switch the vacuum off and remove the battery where possible before checking or clearing a brush bar. Never run fingers along a spinning bar, and use blunt-ended scissors carefully if you need to cut threads free.

## Looking after an anti-tangle head

A quick check every week or two keeps most anti-tangle heads working well. Homes with several pets or long-haired residents may need to check more often. For more on pet hair cleaning routines, see the [pet hair stage](https://wandandfloor.co.uk/stage/pet-hair) and our article on whether [stick vacuums are good for carpet](https://wandandfloor.co.uk/blog/are-stick-vacuums-good-for-carpet).

1. Switch off and remove the battery or detach the head from the wand.
2. Turn the head over and look along the bar and at both ends.
3. Remove any thread, string or hair caught at the end caps.
4. Check the comb or vanes are clear and undamaged.
5. If your head has a removable brush-roll, take it out as the manual describes and clean around the bearings.
6. Refit the bar securely before using the vacuum again.

## Frequently asked questions

**Does Shark Anti Hair Wrap really work?** It is designed to remove hair from the brush-roll continuously as you clean, so most hair goes into the dust cup rather than wrapping. It reduces how often you need to clear the roll, but thread and very long hair can still catch, so a quick check now and then is sensible.

**Does the Dyson V15 have an anti-tangle head?** The V15 Detect Animal's High Torque head has a de-tangling comb that Dyson says automatically clears hair from the brush bar, and the kit includes the Hair screw tool with an anti-tangle conical brush bar. Kits vary by version, so check what is included in the box.

**Is anti hair wrap only useful for pet owners?** No. Long human hair wraps more readily than most pet hair, so anyone with long-haired people in the house benefits. Pet owners gain most on carpets and rugs where hair weaves into the pile.

**Do soft roller heads tangle?** Soft rollers can collect hair in their fabric, though it usually pulls off more easily than from bristles. Some makers add combs or other features to their soft rollers too. Check the listing for your model.
